Fixed Odds: 2008 Test Series - Eng v NZ

England tipped for whitewash

England's players may not have shown too much form in the early days of the County season but that hasn't affected their price to win the opening Test series of the summer, the three-Test contest against New Zealand, which begins on Thursday.

Bet365 make England 1/4 (1.25) favourites, with New Zealand a massive 10/1 and the draw a 4/1 chance.

Now the vagaries of the English summer, especially the early part, mean that there is always the chance of a few days' play being washed out, increasing the chances of a drawn match - even if the weather of the past week has been perfect.

However, the way most Test matches are played these days means that you tend to need at least two full days of rain to stop one side from winning the match, and in this case, you have one side that, on paper at least, is far superior to the other.

Daniel Vettori's New Zealand side will be massively light on experience, notably after the retirement of Stephen Fleming and the injury to Jesse Ryder, one of their more promising players. Without them, they will struggle to make runs and England deserve their favourite tag.

Indeed, the price of 1/4 is perhaps the longest England will be before the first Test begins, especially if the likes of Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones continue to win their battles to return to full fitness.

The advantage of playing at home can never be overestated, either. India's dramatic triumph late last summer was the first series that England had lost at home since the Ashes of 2001.

New Zealand have had success in England in the past, winning series in 1986 - thanks largely to the efforts of Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe, and in 1999, when they scrapped to a 1-0 triumph.

But the last time they played each other in England, in 2004, England ran out 3-0 winners with a series whitewash and I would not be surprised if the result was something similar again this time.

In fact, the 3-0 England win is the second favourite in the correct scores market at just 11/4, which is as good an indicator as you can get as to the strength of the two sides.

A 2-0 win for England is the favourite at 21/10, while England are 5/1 to win it 1-0 and 13/2 for them to come out on top 13/2.

A 1-1 draw is a 6/1 chance, while a 0-0 draw is 18/1. New Zealand are 25/1 to win it 1-0 and the same price to win it 2-0. Vettori's side are 33/1 to win 2-1 and a whopping 125/1 to complete a whitewash of their own.

If England play as they can, then I really can see this being a 3-0 win, so take the 11/4, as it's just about worth it.
