Kambli and Sidhu were involved in a century partnership of 116 (or 126) after Prabhakar went quite early in the innings. Kambli was also involved in two 50 partnerships with Tendulkar and Azharuddin who according to Harsha Bhogle played stylish cricket but could not last long. Sri Lankan bowlers were disappointing considering the fact that the wicket had some grass on it when Azhar had won the toss and had elected to bat first. Their wayward bowling is pretty much well reflected in the number of extras thatthey have given so far. Also they fell way short of the required 80/82 overs that were to be bowled for the day. They bowled a paltry 73 overs despite the fact that play was extended for 55 minutes over the scheduled time. Thanks to Sriram on r.s.c. Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com) ======== MORE Brilliant newcomer Vinod Kambli reached his third consecutive three-figure mark in Test innings by hitting a century as India piled on the runs on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The 21-year-old left-hander, who became only the third batsman in history to score successive double centuries against England and Zimbabwe earlier this year, added an unbeaten 119 to help India reach 300 for four at the close. He made 224 against England in only his third Test and followed it up with an equally fine knock of 227 against test minnows Zimbabwe. Kambli, who batted for 334 minutes, came to the wicket after opener Manoj Prabhakar (4) had departed with the total on 25. Assuming complete control of the day's play after joining opener Navjot Sidhu (82) in the morning session, Kambli sprayed the ball to all parts of the field. When bad light halted play six overs short of the stipulated 90 overs, Kambli had hit 13 boundaries and a six. Playing in his sixth Test and only his first Test innings away from home, the left-hander survived a chance to wicket-keeper Ashley de Silva when on 41 off spinner Ruwan Kalpage. He reached his century by driving medium-paced off-cutter Jayananda Warnaweera to the long-off boundary. Sri Lanka brought in Kalpage for off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan while India fielded an unchanged side from the first Test. Kambli handled an unimpressive seam attack with ease, perhaps making Sri Lanka regret the surprising decision to drop seasoned pace bowler Champaka Ramanayake for seamer Pramodya Wickramasinghe. Kambli joined opener Navjot Sidhu for a 126-run second wicket stand before Sidhu was superbly caught at forward short-leg by Hashan Tillekeratne off Warnaweera for 82. Sidhu's innings, his seventh test half- century, contained a six and 12 boundaries. Thanks to Vicky on r.s.c. Pramodaya Wickramasinghe and Jayananda Warnaweera got three wickets each yesterday to control Indian innings from the overnight score of 300 for 4. Vinod Kambli added 6 more runs to his first day score of 119. Kapil scored a quick 35 (in 29 balls), with the rest of the Indian batting offering little. Lankans had a quick start as well. Roshan Mahanama was caught behind of Prabhakar with 22 at his team score of 48. Gurusinghe, Hathurusinghe and Aravinda de Silva followed to leave Sri Lanka at 96/4. Prabhakar bowled well for his two (Gurusinghe lbw for 4 was the other) wickets, and Kumble got the other two. Then the Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga, a stylish left arm batsman, scored a strokeful 82 to put Sri Lankans at a strong position, and leave the match very evenly poised. At stumps on the second day the score was 200 for four. Hashan Tillekeratne (23 not out) is the other not out batsman with the captain, in a partnership that is so far worth 104 runs. Thanks to BBC Sports Roundup, Vicky & Sriram on r.s.c. =========== MORE India crashed from a comfortable 300 for four to 366 all out five minutes before lunch on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday. Seamer Pramodya Wickramasinghe (three for 83) and medium-paced off-cutter Jayananda Warnaweera (three for 76) took two quick wickets each as India failed to build up on their overnight score of 300 for four. Centurion Vinod Kambli was the first to go when medium pacer Chandika Hathurusinghe induced him to chase a ball leaving the off-stump to be caught brilliantly at first slip by Roshan Mahanama. Kambli had batted for 356 minutes and faced 226 balls during his great knock of 125 which included 13 fours and a six. The other overnight batsman Pravin Amre was then joined by all-rounder Kapil Dev who celebrated his 126th Test by whacking 35 off 28 balls with seven fours before being trapped leg-before to medium-pacer Asanka Gurusinha. Dev has now overtaken former skipper Sunil Gavaskar as the Indian with the most number of Test appearances. Only Australian skipper Allan Border has represented his country more times than Dev. Dev and tail-end batsman Anil Kumble were clearly unhappy with the umpires decision to rule them out leg-before. Kumble fell to Wickramasinghe who also had Rajesh Chauhan caught by wicket-keeper Ashley de Silva in the same over. Amre, who was the last man out, was perhaps dejected by the shortage of partners as he hit the first ball of Warnawera's 21st over to cover point only to be caught by Ruwan Kalpage for 21 with a solitary boundary. Warnaweera in his previous over had wicket-keeper Kiran More caught by sole slip fielder Mahanama. Kumble, who was unfortunate to see kiran more muff a leg side stumping chance off arjuna ranatunga, exacted his revenge against the sri lanka skipper inducing him to sky a catch to srinath at square leg. ranatunga made 88 (151 minutes, 122 balls, 15 fours). Three balls later, the leg spinner accounted for ashley de silva, having him caught at forward short leg by praveen amre. srinath got into the act almost immediately when he dismissed ruwan kalpage, the debutant left-hander nicking to more. Kumble picked up his third wicket of the day inside seven balls by trapping left handed dulip liyanage in front. umpire s ponnuthurai gave the batsman out after first having turned the indians' appeal down. srinath also found the dour tillekeratne's edge with a peach of an inswinger for more to take a fine catch on his left. in the space of eight overs today, india had bowled itself into a commanding position. Having secured a first innings lead of 112 runs, india were 11 for no loss in their second knock at lunch.pti cor jr Contributed by durgesh (durgesh@*ncst.ernet.in) ========== MORE Openers Manoj Prabhakar and Navjot Sidhu set up a record-breaking opening wicket stand to put India in the driving seat on the third day of their second Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday. Despite losing two wickets in the space of five runs just before the close, India ended the day on 205 for two in their second innings to secure a huge 317-run lead. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 254 in their first innings in reply to India's 366. Sidhu with a solid 85 not out and vice-captain Sachin Tendulkar, who was unbeaten on 13, are bound to frustrate the Sri Lankans further when play resumes on Saturday after Friday's rest day. Sidhu got his second half-century in the match with a sedate innings that had six boundaries. Prabhakar departed for 95 with 11 fours after posting a 171-run partnership with Sidhu. Their 256-minute association broke a 10-year old record for India against Sri Lanka beating the previous best opening stand of 156 runs between Sunil Gavaskar and Arun Lal in the Madras test in the 1982-83 series. Both batsmen were solid until Prabhakar seemed to lose his concentration with the entry of skipper Arjuna Ranatunga into the attack in the 58th over. The right-handed Prabakhar showed his discomfiture against the medium pacer Ranatunga and was out in the very next over bowled by off- spinner Ruwan Kalpage. Test debutant Kalpage got his second victim in the match by inducing Prabhakar to offer a catch to forward-short leg fielder Hashan Tillekeratne. Prabhakar's 95 equalled his Test best against New Zealand in Napier in 1990. Medium- paced off-cutter Jayananda Warnaweera struck again for Sri Lanka 10 balls later when he had first innings centurion Vinod Kambli (four) caught by wicket-keeper Ashley de Silva. The morning session undoubteldy belonged to Anil Kumble who mesmerised the local batting line-up with three wickets in nine balls. Sri Lanka continuing from an overnight 200 for four, lost five wickets for 11 runs before the last pair of Pramodya Wickramasinghe and Jayananda Warnaweera added 36 vital runs to reduce India's first innings lead. Thanks to vasa Contributed by The Management (help@*nodak.edu) 31 Jul 93 - Day 4 India tightened the screws on the second Test despite a fourth-day recovery by Sri Lanka's senior batsmen on Saturday. Set a massive victory target of 472 in nearly nine hours, including the final day Sunday, the Sri Lankans ended the fourth day nervously on 86 for two. With the wicket certain to spin on the last day, the rest of Sri Lanka's batsmen face a Herculean task. Sri Lanka almost caved into psychological pressure when they lost openers Roshan Mahanama (9) and Chandika Hathurusinghe (43) in the space of 15 runs. But left-hander Asanka Gurusinha (19) and Aravinda de Silva (10) repaired the sudden damage with an unbroken 27-run third wicket stand against some hostile bowling spearheaded by paceman Kapil Dev. Sri Lanka were set the mammoth target after India declared their second innings at 359 for four with superb centuries from opener Navjot Sidhu and vice-captain Sachin Tendulkar, who both made 104. The Sri Lankan batsmen survived some torrid moments generated by the Indian pace attack led by Kapil Dev, who got his 422nd wicket to be just nine wickets away from New Zealander Richard Hadlee's record of 431 scalps. Dev had Mahanama leg-before in the sixth over after tea. For the veteran bowler it was sweet revenge as Mahanama had earlier survived a confident appeal for leg-before by Dev. The Indian fielders also seemed to show great surprise when umpire S. Ponnadurai turned down an appeal from leg-spinner Anil Kumble for a bat-pad catch from Gurusinha when the batsman was on three. India declared their second innings closed just under an hour after lunch with a lead of 471. The Indian innings was dominated by opener Sidhu and Tendulkar, who both earned their first centuries against Sri Lanka on a wicket that was showing signs of crumbling. Despite getting some turn on the pitch, Sri Lanka's off-spin duo of Ruwan Kalpage and Jayananda Warnaweera had to bowl under pressure since they had to capture wickets as well as contain the runs amid a defensive field set up by skipper Arjuna Ranatunga. But the strategy failed as Sidhu and Tendulkar punched holes in the field placings with remarkable ease. Tendulkar took over the dominant role during an enterprising 87-run third wicket stand. Resumed from an overnight 13, he was fortunate to have been dropped on 37 by Warnaweera at fine- leg off seamer Pramodya Wickramasinghe. India's attempt to speedily increase the lead was reflected in the day's second over itself when Sidhu ran four after driving medium pacer Asanka Gurusinha to long-on. The right-handed opening bat eventually departed when he tried to cut medium pacer Hathurusinghe and was caught by wicket-keeper Ashley de Silva for a sedate 104. His fourth Test century in 26 Tests contained seven boundaries and came off 268 balls in 380 minutes. The 20-year-old Tendulkar playing his 27th test forced speedster Dulip Liyanage off the new ball attack by cracking the lanky pace bowler for three fours in two overs, two of the boundaries coming off successive balls. The Bombay batting sensation, who burst into the cricket scene with five test centuries before his 20th birthday, showed he was at his best form on the current tour when he drove, cut and pulled the hapless local attack with disdain. He thumped Warnaweera for a long-on six and then pulled the bowler two balls later to the mid-wicket boundary to the applause of the small but enthusiatic crowd gathered at the Singhalese Sports Club grounds in the morning session. That over from Warnaweera, his 20th, cost the bowler 13 runs. Tendulkar was then joined by Azharuddin to churn out 53 runs for the fourth wicket in 49 minutes. Azharuddin was out in the last ball before lunch from off-spinner Ruwan Kalpage. The Indian captain made 21 with five boundaries. India's expected declaration came 55 minutes after play resumed in the second session. Tendulkar was on 104, his sixth Test century and his fifth ton on foreign soil, which included 11 fours and a six off 161 balls.
