Date-stamped : 19 Mar95 - 14:31 Sri Lanka v Pakistan, Test 3 Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy, 26-31 August 1994 ====> Day 1, 26 Aug 94 In just two sessions, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have bundled Sri Lanka out for their lowest ever Test match score. At lunch, taken after 80 minutes play because of rain, Sri Lanka were 28-4. Mahanama was first to go, caught behind off Waqar for 2, and Samaraweera followed in similar fashion of Akram soon after for 6. Sanjeeva Ranatunga could manage only 5 on de- but before falling caught behind of Waqar, and elder brother Ar- juna was taken at first slip off the same bowler without scoring. Waqar at that stage had figures of 3-11. After lunch, W&W split things more evenly, and Sri Lanka were dismissed easily and cheaply with Waqar finishing on 6-34 and Wasim with 4-30ish. Pakistan were due to bat after tea. The duo -- arguably the world`s best fast- bowling pairing -- dismissed Sri Lanka for 71, the home team`s lowest innings score in test cricket, by tea. At the close, Pak- istan had taken a 38-run lead hitting 109 for two with Aamir Sohail completing his second consecutive test half-century. He remained undefeated on 68. Only rain could have saved Sri Lanka from the debacle, but after a shower cut the morning session to 80 minutes play went on unin- terrupted for the rest of the day. Pakistan lead the series 1-0 after winning the first test. The scheduled second test in Colom- bo last week of a what had been programmed as a three-match series was cancelled due to a post-election curfew. Playing on a pitch with a tinge of grass and in overcast condi- tions, Pakistan decided to include a third fast bowler, 19-year- old Kabir Khan, who is making his test debut. But Waqar and Akram were is such devastating form that they bowled unchanged throughout the Sri Lankan innings which lasted 145 minutes and 28.2 overs. Waqar finished with six for 34 and Akram four for 32. Wicketkeeper Pubudu Dasanayake was the only batsman to offer any serious resistance. His unbeaten 19, the only contribution in double figures apart from the extras, included three fours in one over from Akram. Dasanayake prevented Sri Lanka from going for less than 50. Joined by last man Ravindra Pushpakumara, they produced a last wicket partnership of 25 before Akram had Push- pakumara caught at third slip by Aamir Sohail for six. Waqar made the early breakthrough in the 10th over by having Roshan Mahanama caught behind by wicketkeeper Rashid Latif for two off an outside edge. Latif held two more catches behind the wicket as Sri Lanka reeled to 28 for four by lunch, Dulip Samaraweera falling to Akram for two and test debutant Sanjeeva Ranatunga going to Waqar for five. Waqar ended skipper Arjuna Ranatunga`s innings before he had got off the mark, caught at first slip by Saeed Anwar. The innings lasted only 28.2 overs with Waqar taking six for 34 and Wasim four for 32. It could easily have been worse but Dasanayake and Pushpakumara put on 25 for the final wicket. Source :: The Guardian ====> Day 2, 27 Aug 94 Sri Lanka suffered a second grim day at Kanda in the third Test against Pakistan. Bowled out for 71 in the first innings, they were then on the receiving end of a brisk century by Inzamam-ul- Haq, the centrepiece of Pakistan`s 357 for nine declared. After that Waqar Younis, who took six for 34 first time round, ripped into their second innings with three wickets. A large defeat, now the probable outcome, will give Pakistan the series 2-0. The second Test was cancelled due to political uncertainty following the elections. Source :: The Observer ====> Day 3, 28 Aug 94 Waqar takes five again as Pakistan secure series win WAQAR YOUNIS produced the fourth 10-wicket haul of his Test career as Pakistan thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 52 runs in Kandy to clinch the three-match series. He claimed five for 85 in Sri Lanka`s second innings to finish with match figures of 11 for 119 in Pakistan`s third-Test tri- umph. A record Sri Lanka seventh-wicket stand of 131 between Hashan Tillekeratne and Ruwan Kalpage enabled the home side to achieve a degree of respectability after they had slumped to 78 for six from their overnight score of 17 for three. But it could not delay the inevitable and once the partnership was broken, Kalpage falling to a running catch by the substitute fielder Ramiz Raja off the Test debutant Kabir Khan, the home side were all out for 234.
