Good Morning! Welcome to CricInfo's exclusive Live Coverage of the
first Test match between Sri Lanka and India.
We are at the Galle International Stadium, in the picturesque port
        city of Galle.
Now for some history about the place:
Galle is capital of Southern prov., is 115 km south of Colombo in
Sri Lanka. An agricultural market center, it exports tea, rubber,
coconut oil, cloves, and other products of the surrounding region.
Famous as a trade center for Chinese and Arabs by 100 B.C., Galle
rose to prominence under Portuguese rule (1507-1640), when it
        became Sri Lanka's chief port.
It was the capital of Sri Lanka under the Dutch (1640-56), whose
original fort, built to guard the harbor, still stands. The city
passed to the British in 1796.
Its commercial importance continued until the opening of the Suez
Canal in 1869 and the construction (1885) by the British of a
        modern harbor at Colombo.
The weather forecast for the day is 'partly cloudy', Will have a
high of 28 degrees Celsius, which is going to be comfortable for
        the players.
Now for some interesting stats: The first ever Test match at Galle
was played between Sri Lanka and new Zealand and the home team
were winners by innings and 16 runs.
Mahela Jayawardene played a match winning knock of 167.
So far there has been five Test matches played at the Galle
International Stadium. Sri Lanka has won three Tests, lost one and
drew one. All the four results have been comprehensive wins by an
        innings and more.
Another interesting fact is that Sri Lanka has won the toss on all
occasions except the first Test against the Kiwis. The team
winning the toss has always elected to bat first.
Muttiah Muralitharan, the ace off spinner has played in all the
five Test matches played here at Galle.
So far he has picked up 32 wickets at a miserly average of 18.18,
giving away just 582 runs off 300 overs.
He has an amazing economy rate of 1.94 and a strike rate of 56.2.
His career stats read as; 62 Tests, 317 wickets at 25.62 apiece,
        strike rate of 64.0
The best bowling figures also belongs to the magician 7/84, which
was a part a match haul of 13/171 against South Africa in July
        2000.
If you want to take a look at the scorecard:

        01/RSA_IN_SL/SCORECARDS/RSA_SL_T1_20-24JUL2000.html
On the batting front Mahela Jayawardene is the king of Galle,
scoring 522 runs in six innings at an average of 87.00, he has hit
two half centuries and twice made 167.
       His batting reads as follows: 167, 46, 72, 9, 167, and 61
Today is another day, the pitch has some grass on it, it might help
the fast bowlers and if the rain stays away we will have a result
        in this Test match.
India goes into the Test match without the key players: Sachin
Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Ashish Nehra, all lost to injuries.
Ashish Nehra has been the best of the fast bowlers, he has troubled
        batsmen with the late movement.
Nehra will be sorely missed on a pitch that is bound to help the
        fast bowlers.
Losing two of the front batsmen to injuries is a bad blow by
itself. And, if that happens ot be the world's premier batsman,
Sachin Tendulkar, it hurts that much more.
VVS Laxman is going to be remembered for that herculean innings he
played against Australia at Kolkatta. Laxman will also be missed
        badly by the Indian team.
This presents with a good opportunity for the youngsters like
Badani, Kaif and Mongia, two of them will play in this Test match
        for sure

Match State: Day 1 start at 04:30 GMT (10:30 local time)

India coach John Wright believes in the principle of, Bat once -
        Bat big!
SS Das, Sadogoppan Ramesh, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid have
enough experience in the international arena and will have to play
        at their very best.
The Sri Lankan pace attack is quite capable of running through the
batting order. Chaminda Vaas has the experience and Fernando the
pace. Muralitharan will always remain the most potent weapon in
the Sri Lankan attack on any track.
The Indian bowling is well represented by Javagal Srinath, Zaheer
Khan and Harbhajan Singh. Venkatesh Prasad might take the fourth
        bowler's slot in the side.
Anil Kumble is on the recovery path after a serious injury to his
shoulder. he would have definitely made a big difference here. He
too will be sorely missed by Ganguly and the Indian team.
It is a sunny morning here at Galle
Sri Lanka has won the toss and put India in to bat first
       The teams are as follows:

Match State: Lunch - Day 1

       That's lunch here at Galle
20 overs bowled, 16 runs scored. It has been very slow going.
Important thing is India has not lost a wicket.
The play was held up for good 35 mins when it started pouring down
in the middle of the fourth over of the day.
Ramesh had a slice of good fortune when he was given in after
edging a catch to the keeper. Apart from that it has been a quiet
        morning's play
We will be back with you in just about 35 mins with all the post-
lunch action at Galle. So long.
       Welcome back!

umpires and the players make their way to the middle.

Match State: Stumps - Day 1

Sri Lanka have taken the full honours of the day, reducing India to
        163/5 in 85 overs.
There were a couple of stoppsges due to rain, but then this has
        been a long day
Sri Lanka after winning the toss put India to bat first, Ramesh and
Das put together a slow and patient 79 runs for the first wicket.
Muttiah Muralitharan and dilhara Fernando brought Sri Lanka right
        back into the match.
India will look forward to their skipper to come good tomorrow.
We will be back with you at 1030 Hrs local time, 0430 Hrs GMT, 1000
Hrs IST tomorrow. Thanks for joining us today. Good evening!
Hello and welcome to the Galle International Stadium for the second
day's play of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka
After starting well on a wicket that looked deceptively like a
green top, India lost their way
From being 79/0 India slumped to 161/5 at the end of the day's play
Openers Ramesh and Das both made 40s but could not go on to
        anything more meaningful
The Sri Lankan bowlers struck double blows towards the end of the
day, when the new ball was taken
So the ball is still very new going into the second day and the Sri
        Lankan quicks will be fresh
Sourav Ganguly and Sameer Dighe are at the crease for India and
have a big task ahead of them

Can India make a sizable score? Will Sri Lanka knock the Indians
over quickly? All that and much, much more when the live action
        starts soon. Don't go away!
The skies are pretty clear here at Galle but one must admit that
there are a few clouds hanging around in the vicinity
The wicket has dried out nicely in the heat, the blue skies here
today will dry things up further
With the surface flaking and breaking up just a touch, the spinners
        will certainly come into play
Despite earlier beliefs that this pitch would favour the seamers,
it looks like this is a standard subcontinent wicket
The players are out in the middle and Ganguly will take strike
Chaminda Vaas will take the new-ish ball and begin the proceedings
85.1 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, full and on the off, the ball swings late,
hits the deck and moves away a bit more, Ganguly leaves the ball
        well alone
85.2 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, fuller, straighter and on the pads, the
ball shapes away late once more, but the line forces Ganguly to
play, tapped to the on side with soft hands
85.3 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, just back of a length and on the pads,
Ganguly goes back and across and works the ball away to the on
side, just wide of midwicket though, no chance of a single there
85.4 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, and once more, Vaas slips down the leg
side, Ganguly straddles the crease and plays the ball away to the
on side, closing the face of the bat nicely
85.5 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, just short of a length and on the off
stump this time, Ganguly watches the ball carefully and plays off
the back foot with soft hands, the ball trickles back down the
        wicket
85.6 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, and that too is just short of a driving
length and on the stumps, played cautiously back down the wicket
        with a straight bat

skids through nicely, the ball jags back in a touch from the off
stump line and Dighe is hurried on the shot, off the inside edge
        onto the pads
86.2 Fernando to Dighe, bye: FOUR, full, screaming fast and way down the
leg stump, the ball hits the turf and flies past th keeper to the
fine leg fence, wayward ball that
86.3 Fernando to Dighe, three runs, overpitched and on the pads, late
swing in to the pads, Dighe waits on the ball and punches the ball
well through the vacant midwicket region
86.4 Fernando to Ganguly, no run, just short of a length and down the
leg side, Ganguly plays and misses, the ball goes through to the
        keeper
86.5 Fernando to Ganguly, no run, fuller and on the off, the ball slants
away from the left hander who walks across and strokes the ball to
        point
86.6 Fernando to Ganguly, no run, just short of a length and outside the

to the ball nicely and strokes the ball to point with an angled
        bat
87.3 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, quicker, fuller and a loss of direction on
that count, the ball slips down the leg side, Ganguly moves inside
the line of the ball and tries to glance, played and missed, off
        the pads to the keeper
87.4 Vaas to Ganguly, no run, quicker and just outside the off, this one
jags back off the seam a touch, Ganguly prods and inside edges the
ball onto his pad, stifled appeal for lbw
87.5 Vaas to Ganguly, three runs, full and on the pads, this ball comes
in with the angle of the left arm seamer's arm, played late back
down the wicket with the full face of the bat, good shot that and
        another three the result
87.6 Vaas to Dighe, no run, full and on the off, no swing or seam

        innings
He is continuing to rub salt in India's wounds
Does India really have a way to get Sanath Teran Jayasuriya out!!!!
        ???
He has been scoring runs at will right from the word go
Ganguly & Co. have to pull something special to stop this run riot
        by Jayasuriya
Indians fans should be a worried lot by now
Atapattu should also be a worried man to have missed out on a big
