Ranadeb Bose's dream season continued as his 6 for 38 sent Karnataka crashing to an embarrassing 89 against Bengal at the Eden Gardens. Seamer Sourav Sarkar supported Bose with the four-wicket haul as Bengal wrapped up the innings in just under 39 overs. Rohan Gavaskar led Bengal's reply with a half-century as the home side ended the day 32 ahead, though they lost four wickets in the process.

Karnataka were weakened by the absence of Robin Uthappa - now with the India one-day side - and Bengal exploited that, dismissing the top three with just six on board. When Bose sent back KB Pawan, he went past Haryana's Joginder Sharma as the leading wicket-taker of the Ranji Trophy. The situation got progressively worse as Karnataka were reduced to 24 for 6. Yere Goud, the captain, scratched around for 39 balls and failed to score a run. Things finally looked up when wicketkeeper Thilak Naidu and Vinay Kumar added 52 for the seventh wicket. Naidu's 33 came off 57 balls with seven fours while Vinay Kumar's 23 included four boundaries. However, Bose struck again trapping Kumar in front and the innings came to a close soon after. Bose now has 44 wickets with five five-wicket hauls this season, the most for either division.

Karnataka's seamers, Vinay Kumar and Srinivasa Dhananjaya too had their say early on as Bengal were in a spot of bother at 16 for 3. However, an 83-run stand between Gavaskar and Arindam Das gave the initiative back to Bengal. Gavaskar scored at a lively pace, picking up 12 fours before falling for 63, while Das remained unbeaten on 45.

A captain's innings of 97 by Amol Muzumdar was the highlight of the day as Mumbai were bowled out for 233 against Baroda at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara. The new-ball attack of Irfan Pathan and Rakesh Patel kept Mumbai in check as many were guilty of giving their wickets away after making starts, with the exception of Muzumdar.

Baroda justified their decision to field first as Mumbai lost four wickets with 75 on board. Muzumdar and Abhishek Nair staged a recovery, adding 70 for the fifth wicket, but that was the only productive partnership of the day. The spinners, Rajesh Pawar and Yusuf Pathan chipped in with three wickets while the seamers mopped up the tail. Muzumdar was the last to be dismissed, unlucky to fall three short of a deserving century.
