Date-stamped : 16 Mar94 - 10:26 Ind v NZ Acad XI, New Plymouth, 14-16 Mar 94 ====> Day 1, 14 Mar 94 Comments on the rain-shortened pre-lunch session: The Academy XI are finding the Indian bowling attack more diffi- cult than the first game on tour. The commentators have praised Srinath --- he got a lot of positive comment after the first game which I'm not sure I reported. The NZ commentators have expressed surprise he wasn't playing in the recent matches in India. Kum- ble is apparently troubling the batsmen more than he did in Match 1 so that is good news for leg spin fans. Other comments: It looks like the two openers who failed against Pakistan have nevertheless comfirmed their tour to England places with Hartland getting 98 against India last game and Pocock now getting 100+ The only bowler with positive newspaper comments was Srinath. "Srinath had the Academy XI openers struggling almost immediately occassions" Most of the batsmen seemed to have not too much trouble with Kum- ble - except Burnett who never looked likely to last long against him. Apparently the key according to commentator/former NZ Test batsman John Parker who played against the vaguely similar Chan- drasekhar, is to play Kumble as if he were an off spinner. Po- cock approached him that way. Contributed by Howard (howard@tahi.isor.vuw.ac.nz) ====> Day 2, 15 Mar 94 Marred by rain and bad light. NZ Acac XI 253-5 dec.
