Date-stamped : 11 Mar94 - 14:25 Ind v NZ Emerging XI, Dunedin, 10-12 Mar 94 ====> Day 1, 10 Mar 94 Kapil Dev did not bowl, captain Azharuddin saying he had a stiff neck. Hartland (NZ's current Test opener) bought up his 50 with a six off Raju, but fell 2 short of his 100. Hartland's brief assessment of the spinners: "Kumble moves the ball very quickly through the air... but definitely Raju is the most difficult to play." They say he will be able to bowl longer spells because he is stronger that Srinath. - Mongia's work was appreciated by the commentators. - My impression, except Srinath, Ankola and Mongia rest of the Indians - Mongia's work was appreciated by the commentators. - My impression, except Srinath, Ankola and Mongia rest of the Indians took it easy. Manjrekar was last out for 134. On the evidence of this, the Indians don't have much of a tail, but we know Kapil can bat. Fringe Test paceman Micheal Owens was deemed best of the bowlers although former Test spinner Bradburn had the best figures. Owens bowled 21 overs of straight fast deliveries conceding only 43 runs. If he does make the Test team it will be in place of Chris Cairns, with Morrison and Pringle certainties and Doull injured. Stumps were drawn at the conclusion of the Indian innings Contributed by Howard (howard@*.isor.vuw.ac.nz) ====> Day 2, MORE Day-2 [RNZI commentary from lunch to almost close of play] - M.Owens was certainly quick, they say close to genuine pace. - M.Sharp also generated pace close to Owens. - Rest of the bowl- ing was very ordinay. - All Indian batsmen struggled against M.Owens. - Siddhu had some agonising moments against Owens and Sharp. - Kambli was stumped of the off-spinner. Azhar was also out to the spinner. - Indians were good in placing their shots, scoring rate was good. - Prabhakar played a stout in- nings, he punished loose balls. - Manjarekar was the best among the Indi- ans, but was not at his best. - Owens and Sharp bowled extremely well with the second new ball. The score when the 2nd ball was taken was 300(+)/3. In 10 overs time the score was 330-340/7. - Kapil struggled with the bat, he was facing the 2nd new ball at- tack. - Mongia had no clue how play genuine pace. He lasted only 2 or 3 balls. - Kumble narrowly missed being knocked down by a Sharp's rising ball. - The tail just folded, once Owen and Sharp was removed tail looked ok. - The commentators say Indian top batting is better than Pakistan top batting. - But there are miles of difference in the bowling department.
