New Zealand go two-up after easy win in Wellington
New Zealand opener Debbie Hockley has steared the home side to a comprehensive eight wicket win over England in the second women's one dayer at the Westpac Trust Stadium in Wellington.
Hockley, unbeaten on 65, carried her bat through the innings to see the Kiwis home in the 40th over. It typifies Hockley's role in the team as the anchor of the side and the 37-year-old, who averages over 40 in one day internationals, seems to revel in it as shown with this innings and her knock of 40 in the first match.
The Kiwis batted with purpose and stout defence today while dispatching the bad ball for runs. When it comes to their batting they were very clinical against a useful English bowling attack.
England will be disappointed with their effort today. Despite a delay due to rain and the start of the match accompanied by heavy cloud England made a bright start. At 110 for two after 36 overs they were heading for a score close to 200 but a collapse of eight for 27 so the visitors all out for 141 in the 43rd over. Included in that were three run outs which were needless and bad timed.
The bowling was also short in good points with only Pearson and captain Connor showing any control and purpose. The remainder of the attack were too short and were easily picked off while the fielding typified what a poor performance it was by the visitors today. Runs were lost with mis-fields while Hockley was dropped when on 39.
England have a lot of improving to do if they are to be competitive in this series. They offer alot on paper, it's just the execution which is lacking. Let's see if they can make the step up in Auckland in two days time.
