Match State: Day 1 start scheduled to start at 09:30 IST (0400 GMT)

Good day and welcome to CricInfo's coverage of the first India-West
Indies Test match, to be played on a hot and humid day at the
        Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The first day of the series is always important, if at least to get
that vital psychological edge over the other team. But how much of
that edge India will need is debatable.
For India at home are a formidable, formidable opposition, aided by
weather conditions, turning tracks and vociferous crowds. The
second factor, however, may just have been taken out of the
        equation for this Test.
The newly relaid Wankehede Stadium track sports slight patches of
green that may just be the happiest sight to meet the West Indian
fast bowlers' eyes on this tour. The traces of moisture, however,
will dry out in no time at all under the blazing sun.
After the series loss in the Caribbean earlier this year, India
will be looking to get a little of their own back in this series.
The West Indies are without star batsman Brian Lara, who withdrew
during the recent ICC Champions Trophy, and that is a huge lacuna
in the line-up, not only for the team but also for the crowds.
But memories of Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul torturing
the Indian bowlers are still fresh, and combined with the form
that the other top-order batsmen showed at Bangalore, that should
give the West Indians some hope.
Carl Hooper, playing his 100th Test today at the same venue of his
debut, will consider a winning start to the series the best
        possible celebration of the occasion.
Their bowling is still their biggest drawback, with spinner
Mahendra Nagamootoo not troubling the Board President's XI batsmen
too much in the tour game. The fast bowling, with the exception of
Merv Dillon, is green and inexperienced in these conditions.
India, on the other hand, seem to hold all the aces. Their batting
is one of the mightiest in world cricket, while their bowling at
home has proved difficult to scale for every team over the years.
The toss was won by Sourav Ganguly, who elected to have a bat first
        up.
       Teams:
India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag,
Rahul Dravid, Javagal Srinath, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Anil
Kumble, Sanjay Bangar, Parthiv Patel, VVS Laxman
West Indies: Carl Hooper (captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris
Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ryan Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Mervyn Dillon,
Pedro Collins, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Ridley Jacobs, Cameron Cuffy
0.1 Dillon to Bangar, no run, tapped to the onside, Sanjay Bangar
        taking first strike here.
0.2 Dillon to Bangar, no run, just outside the off, and nipping back
off the seam to the right-hander, who lets it alone outside the
        off.
0.3 Dillon to Bangar, no run, fuller this time, and Bangar jams down on
it to drive back to Dillon on the bounce.
0.4 Dillon to Bangar, FOUR, just short of a length, and Bangar comes
forward instead of going back, the ball taking the shoulder of the
bat and getting the edge to run away past gully for four to third
        man.
0.5 Dillon to Bangar, no run, good line and length, just full enough to
make the batsman come forward, yet moving late to beat the probing
        bact.
0.6 Dillon to Bangar, no run, short ball, outside off and directed into
the batsman, who ducks out of harm's way easily.

V Sehwag 0* (0b) SB Bangar 4* (6b 1x4)

Pedro Collins to partner Dillon from the Tata End.
1.1 Collins to Sehwag, (noball) no run, fulla nd fast, and Sehwag tries
the whip to leg and misses. A half-hearted appeal from Collins,
but the ball is missing leg.
1.1 Collins to Sehwag, two runs, full and on the legs again, and this
time Sehwag gets the whip right, turning it nicely to the square
        leg area for a brace.
1.2 Collins to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, rising on the off
stump, and Sehwag gets on his toes and plays it nicely to extra
        cover.
1.3 Collins to Sehwag, no run, full and on the middle and legs tump,
and Sehwag gets on the front foot, almost falling over in the
attempt to play it down to the short leg fielder.
1.4 Collins to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, patted away to the
        offside field.
1.5 Collins to Sehwag, legbye: one run, a snorter! short and rising
fast, and Sehwag tries to duck out of the way, but he is not fast
enough and is struck on the helmet. The ball runs away to leg for
        a leg bye.
1.6 Collins to Bangar, no run

V Sehwag 2* (6b) SB Bangar 4* (7b 1x4)

2.1 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, on the off stump, and Sehwag seems more
comfortable with the right hander over the wicket than the left-
        arm Collins.
2.2 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, outside the off, and
Sehwag tries the slash, but the feet are not going anywhere and
        the ball beats th ebat.
2.3 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, rising delivery again, outside the off,
and Sehwag spars at it and outside-edges it, but the ball fall
        sjust short of slip[.
2.4 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, short of a lenght, and Sehwag retreats
into his crease and defends on the back foot.
2.5 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, similar ball again, and Sehwag on the
back foot this time gets a high outside edge, but the ball yet
again does not carry to the third slip fielder, falling just short
        to his right.
2.6 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, nipping further into the batsman this
time, and Sehwag is beaten between bat and body, trying an airy
ambiguous stroke and missing the line completely.

SB Bangar 4* (7b 1x4) V Sehwag 2* (12b)

3.1 Collins to Bangar, no run, on middle and leg, defended back nicely.
An attacking field here set by Hooper, with a short leg, silly
mid-off, and a tight slip cordon to boot.
3.2 Collins to Bangar, no run, rising delivery, solidly defended to the
        off on his toes.
3.3 Collins to Bangar, (noball) no run, Collins overstepping for the
second time today, in just his second over.
3.3 Collins to Bangar, no run, short delivery, rising outside the off,
and Bangar merely sways away fromt he line to leg.
3.4 Collins to Bangar, no run, steered away on the back foot to gully.
3.5 Collins to Bangar, no run, short, but outside the leg, and Bangar
        ducks forward and down.
3.6 Collins to Bangar, two runs, drifting to leg, and Bangar flicks it
away, but although nicely timed, he only gets two, the outfield in
the deep midwicket region looking slow.

End of over 4 (3 runs) India 11/0
PT Collins 2-0-6-0 (2nb) - Tata End
V Sehwag 2* (12b) SB Bangar 6* (14b 1x4)

4.1 Dillon to Sehwag, one run, full, and Sehwag comes forward and half-
edges half-steers it to the left of a diving gully for one to
        third man.
4.2 Dillon to Bangar, no run, full and swinging just a touch into the
batsman, and Bangar is rapped on the front pad as he walks
forward. A loud, concerted appeal, but the batsman is playing a
stroke and is too far forward.
4.3 Dillon to Bangar, no run, another appeal, a better one too, and
Bangar is still hit on the walk, but fractionally outside off,
        which saves him.
4.4 Dillon to Bangar, no run, outside the off, nipping in with the arm,
and Bangar leaves this one alone.
4.5 Dillon to Bangar, no run, sharp nip from outside off, but more than
that the carry is the surprise, which even catches Jacobs behind
        the stumps off his guard.
4.6 Dillon to Bangar, no run, fuller and Bangar drives to the onside.

End of over 5 (1 run) India 12/0
M Dillon 3-1-5-0 - Garware Pavilion End
V Sehwag 3* (13b) SB Bangar 6* (19b 1x4)

5.1 Collins to Sehwag, FOUR, and finally Sehwag gives the crowd what it
is waiting for. Just short of a length, predictable bounce, and
Sehwag goes back and simply strokes it through the off, between
point and cover for his first four.
5.2 Collins to Sehwag, FOUR, and more! this time short of a lenght but
closer to the body, and Sehwag opens the face of the bat nicely
and glides it between third slip and gully for his second four.
5.3 Collins to Sehwag, no run, short of a lenght, b ut this time on the
legs, and Shewag defends it back to Collins.
5.4 Collins to Sehwag, no run, steered to cover.
5.5 Collins to Sehwag, no run, on middle and leg, pushed on the back
        foot to the off.

and plays it past the waiting short leg fielder.
6.3 Dillon to Bangar, no run, full and Bangar is brought forward again,
playing it down with soft hands.
6.4 Dillon to Bangar, no run, outside the off, and Bangar shoulders
arms, letting the ball go past.
6.5 Dillon to Bangar, no run, further outside the off, and no problems
        leaving that one alone either.
6.6 Dillon to Bangar, no run, fulla nd outside the off, patted away to
        the offside.

Cameron Cuffy now into the attack, replacing Collins.
7.1 Cuffy to Sehwag, no run, drifting down leg, and Sehwag tries the
tickle to fine leg but the ball beats him and goes through to the
        keeper.
7.2 Cuffy to Sehwag, no run, drifting to leg again, and Sehwag is on
the abck foot already, waiting to pat it back to the bowler.

steps up with the front foot and leaves the ball alone.
7.4 Cuffy to Sehwag, no run, short and cut away, but straight to the
        point fielder.
7.5 Cuffy to Sehwag, legbye: one run, drifting onto the pads, and
Sehwag tries the heave to leg and misses, the ball clipping pad
and running away to fine leg for one.

        Sehwag leaves the ball alone.
8.2 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, full and fast, right up in the blockhole,
but Sehwag is equal to the task, defending easily to the off on
        the back foot.
8.3 Dillon to Sehwag, no run
8.4 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, defended solidly.
8.5 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, steered away to the cover fielder, the
West Indian bowlers keeping Sehwag relatively quiet here.
8.6 Dillon to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, and some away movement
        for Dillon. Sehwag shoulders arms.

length does not warrant it, Bangar gets obdurately forward and

Match State: Lunch - Day 1

Not a fruitful session for the Windies this morning. Hooper would
have expected his bowlers to take more advantage of the freshness
in the wicket, but no batsmen have been dismissed thus far.
India of course will be only too happy with teh state of affairs.
Bangar is playing a solid innings, a nice foil to Sehwag's
attacking play at the other end.
While Bangar has 18 off 87 balls, Sehwag in only two deliveries
more has made 53 with 11 fours, showing glimpses of teh form he
enjoyed in teh ICC Champions Trophy.
Hooper's concern will be that the bowling seems very toothless
indeed. Merv Dillon, the spearhead, could not pick up any wickets
in his tight opening spell, while the spinners - Nagamootoo and
Hooper himself - could find no purchase on the track.
Forty minutes for lunch, so do join us after that for the afternoon
        session.
Welcome back after lunch, where Carl Hooper will continue to bowl
        his off-spin.

Match State: Tea - Day 1

One hundred runs coming in the afternoon session, off 29 overs - a
scoring rate much improved from the earlier session.
A very worrying session for Carl Hooper and his West Indians, who
have now gone 58 overs without a wicket.
At one end they are faced with Sanjay Bangar's obdurate batting,
his 44 runs coming off a whopping 171 balls.
At the other end is Sehwag, who set the stadium alight with his
stroke play today, making 124 off just 180 balls with 2 fours and
        two sixes.
In the process, the pair have put on a record first-woicket
partnership for India against the West Indies on any ground - and
they aren't done yet, by the looks of it.

Match State: Stumps - Day 1

And that ends a very solid, very fruitful day for India with the
bat, reaching a score of 278 for two.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly a scintillating hundred
from Sehwag, 147 runs coming from 206 balls with hardly a chance
        offered.
Bangar gave him excellent suppport at the other end, making a
stolid but invaluable 55, giving Sehwag the freedom to play his
        shots at the other end.
The West Indian bowling, of course, was nothing to write home about
        either.
The pacemen, except for Merv Dillon, bowled without luck or
inspiration, but the real blow for Hooper will be the performance
        of Nagamootoo.
Being the only spinner in the team, Hooper would have looekd to him
to pprovide many breakthroughs on the subcontinent, but no luck
        there.
Nagamootoo was played very easily indeed, first by Sehwag and
Bangar, and then by Dravid and Tendulkar. The leg-spinner went for
        70 runs in 21 overs.
Slim hope in the third session, when Dillon snapped up first Bangar
and then Sehwag in the same spell, turned non-existent when Dravid
and Tendulkar - on his home ground - played till close without any
        trouble.
The Wets Indies, in fact, are the team in trouble at the momenth,
and when they take the field tomorrow, they will have to pray for
some quick wickets to get a chance in this game.
Whether that happens or not, is of course in tomorrow's realm. So
join us at 9:30 IST, 04:00 GMT for all the action from the
        Wankhede. Till then, good night.

New ball has been taken straight away
90.1 Dillon to Dravid, no run, on the middle and leg, turned to square
        leg
       3 slips
90.2 Dillon to Dravid, no run, outside the off, good bounce, Jacobs
doesn't collect well and drops the ball
90.3 Dillon to Dravid, no run, outside the off, left alone, once again a
        good carry
this indicates that West Indian bowlers were not bending their back
        yesterday at all
90.4 Dillon to Dravid, one run, on the middle and leg, good bounce once
again, turned to fine leg for the first run of the day
       fielding changes for Tendulkar
a thirdman comes to effect besides 3 slips
90.5 Dillon to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, played to point.
        Hints of outside edge
90.6 Dillon to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, short and bouncing.
Tendulkar does well to weave away from the ball, and lets it go

a very good first over by Dillon. There is life in the pitch if the

       left arm over the wicket
91.1 Collins to Dravid, no run, loose first ball, slow and well pitched
up outside the off, Dravid goes for the cover drive but mistimes
91.2 Collins to Dravid, no run, well pitched up on the legs, rapped on
the pads, big shout from Collins but no support from other
fielders. Asoka de Silva is not interested
91.3 Collins to Dravid, no run, on the stumps, played defensively back
        to the bowler
91.4 Collins to Dravid, one run, on the off, pushed to point and a quick
run. A bit of overthrow but no additional runs

falls short of second slip. Early morning jitters for Dravid
it may be prudent for the slips to stand further ahead
92.2 Dillon to Dravid, one run, short in to the ribs, tucked away to
square leg, Dravid escapes to the other end
3 slips in place, first slip standing well behind
92.3 Dillon to Tendulkar, no run, fast on the off, squares Tendulkar up,
played to covers but not much grace in that defense
Dillon has been impressive today so far
92.4 Dillon to Tendulkar, OUT: outside the off, takes a faint edge in to
the gloves of Jacobs! Dillon strikes and the crowd is stunned.
