Match State: Day 1 start scheduled to start at 09:30 IST (04:00 GMT)
Good morning all, and welcome to a bright and sunny morning for the
second Test of this three-match India-West Indies series at the MA
Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The first Test won comprehensively by India, who notched up their
first-ever innings win over the West Indies, the tourists are now
under pressure to bounce back in this match.
Captain Carl Hooper cites recent history - the West Indies came
back from one-down to win a series in the Caribbean earlier this
year - to bolster team morale, but he will find it tough to repeat
that feat here.
Like the Wankhede Stadium, Chepauk has a relaid track, and just
like Mumbai's pitch, this too does not look to be vastly different
from its predecessor.
Both captains opined that the track would take turn from day one,
and then proceed to turn square later in the match. That will
bring back memories of Narendra Hirwani's 16-136 when these teams
last met here in 1988.
The first rains of this monsoon season visited Chennai last week,
but today - at the very least - looks to be sunny and hot, 34
degrees as opposed to Mumbai's 37. No let-up on the temperature
front for the West Indies, then.
The West Indies will be looking to square the series here,
hopefully by lifting their dismal batting standards from Mumbai to
leave run-scoring to more people than Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
India, for their part, are on a roll, and their mighty batting
perfectly complements their spin-force on home wickets. The
punters, therefore, would feel obligated to put their money on the
home side.
But there are five days of cricket to be played, and - in the
hoariest of cliches - anything could happen.
The toss was won by Carl Hooper, who opted to have first bat. The
Indian team remains unchanged, but the West Indies have brought in
Gareth Breese and Jermaine Lawson for Cameron Cuffy and Mahendra
Nagamootoo.
Teams:
India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid,
VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Sanjay Bangar, Parthiv Patel, Anil

West Indies: Carl Hooper (captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ridley
Jacobs, Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ryan Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan,
Pedro Collins, Mervyn Dillon, Jermaine Lawson, Gareth Breese,

the air or off the pitch, and Gayle shoulders arms again.
0.3 Srinath to Gayle, no run, on off stump, just short of a length, and

1.4 Khan to WW Hinds, one run, sliding down leg, and Hinds clips it
away off his pads to fine leg for a single, getting his team off
the mark.
1.5 Khan to Gayle, no run, correcting his line, Zaheer pushes this one
outside off again, and Gayle shoulders arms.
1.6 Khan to Gayle, no run, outside the off, and sharp bounce this time
from Zaheer, Parthiv collecting it at shoulder-heigth.

3.4 Khan to Gayle, no run, steered on his toes to the left of gully.
3.5 Khan to Gayle, no run, short ball, and nice bounce for Zaheer, but

tempt the batsman into a shot.
5.3 Khan to Gayle, no run, short of a length, and Gayle on the back

does not quite get up high enough, but Hinds gets under it easily
anyway.

7.1 Khan to Gayle, no run, pushed to extra cover. A slow start for he
West Indies here, one run from seven overs!
7.2 Khan to Gayle, FOUR, full and Gayle drives this one down the

and the ball runs away to the boundary right behind the bowler,
Sourav Ganguly giving chase and not succeeding in pulling it back.
Gayle off the mark~
7.3 Khan to Gayle, no run, short of a lenght, tempting the batsman into

And that ends a slow first session for the West Indies, only 45
runs coming from 30 overs of play at the rate of 1.5 runs per
over.
A steady start maybe, but the rate of scoring really has to be
upped if the West Indies want to win this Test, not just draw it.
For India, Harbhajan Singh was the sole successful bowler, taking
the wicket of Gayle.
Join us for the second session post-lunch, in 40 minutes.

Match State: Tea - Day 1
That will be tea, atfer a session that was marginally faster than
the first one.
But that is not saying much, and aside from Carl Hooper's quickfire
35 off 38, the West Indian batting really ground the bowling
slowly.
But India definitely had the upper hand of the 26 overs since
lunch.
Three wickets fell, and at 118/4, with only a shaky batting to
follow, the West Indies are in some deep waters.
Do join us again after tea for the ifnal session as India look to
push home the advantage.

And that ends the first day's play at Chennai, with the West Indies
reaching 167 and India then at 31 for no loss in eight overs./
Do come backj tomorrow at 9:30 IST for the second day's play. Till
then, goodbye.
Welcome to the second morning of the second Test between India and
the West Indies, being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in
Chennai.
The city experienced lashing rains last night, and that may delay
the start of the day's play. The weather is overcast and gloomy -
by Chennai standards, at least!
That will encourage the West Indian fast bowlers, who are set with
the task of making up with the ball where their batsmen failed
them.
The tourists got only 167 in their first innings yesterday, and if
they are to have a sniff of victory in this game, the bowling must
perform exceedingly well.
India, for their part, did little wrong yesterday, getting the West
Indies out fast and then racking up 31 for no loss in the final 8
overs of play.
Their task is equally clear-cut - build a big first-innings total,
and hopefully then wrap up the West Indies on the fourth and fifth
days, on a turning track, to seal the series right here.
Efforts are on now to dry the pitch and certain areas of the
outfield, so a delayed start looks on the cards, even though the
sun has come out and is doing its job of drying the environs.
Umpire Shepherd just mentioning now that the outfield and pitch
will be inspected at 11 a.m. IST, around an hour and a half from
now.
The inspection is under-way at the moment, folks, but the
conditions are still damp and the umpires have stated that play
will begin at 12:10.
That may mean that the players will take early lunch and come out
at 12:10 for two extended sessions of play.
Match State: Day 2 start scheduled for 12:10 IST
Play will continue today till 5:30 p.m., an hour after the
scheduled close of play, with - if needed - the use of lights.
Umpire de Silva still has hopes of 75 overs of play being fitted in
today.
