Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 11am local time (10am GMT/15.30 IST)

       Good Morning
Hello and welcome to the Live Coverage of the npower Test series
        between India and England.
Here we are at Lord's for the first npower Test match.
This is Alec Stewart's 119th for Test Match, beating the record set
        by Graham Gooch.
England are without their top guns - Darren Gough, Andy Caddick,
Alex Tudor and Marcus Trescothick, all these players are injured.
This opens up an opportunity for a few youngsters to make a mark at
        the highest level.
Simon Philip Jones makes his Test debut at Lord's. He is the son of
former Glamorgan and England pace bowler Ivor Jeffrey Jones, a
left-arm fast bowler who played for `England in the sixties.
Well, Papa Jones had one five-wicket haul in Test cricket, picking
up 6/118 against Australia in January 1966.
Interestingly, his wickets included that of Bob Simpson (225) and a
certain Ian Chappell (17) batting at number 7.
Simon Jones is a genuine quick bowler and should go on to do
greater things in Test cricket than what his dad could achieve.
English cricket legend Ian Botham has ben backing Simon Jones. The
big man says, "Simon is still young and pretty raw, but so was
Dennis Lillee when he first turned up.
So was Jeff Thompson. Simon has got plenty of pace and that's half
the battle at Test level." Jones' FC record is quite ordinary
though, having claimed 89 wickets at almost 37 runs apiece.
Having said that, Jones has been quite impressive this year,
picking up 36 of those wickets at 24.5 runs apiece.
The youngster has reduced his run-up from 26 paces to nine, having
sought the help of Olympic long jumper Lyn Davies.
Mark Butcher will open the innings with Michael Vaughan in the
absence of Marcus Trescothick with a broken thumb.
Captain Nasser Hussain will bat at number three and Graham Thorpe
at four, with the returning John Crawley at five.
Alec Stewart, who becomes England's most-capped Test player with
119 appearances, will bat at six.
England : N Hussain (Essex, capt), MA Butcher (Surrey), MP Vaughan
(Yorkshire), GP Thorpe (Surrey), JP Crawley (Hampshire), AJ
Stewart (Surrey, wkt), A Flintoff (Lancashire), C White
(Yorkshire), AF Giles (Warwickshire), MJ Hoggard (Yorkshire), SP
        Jones
India go into this Test match with a high level of confidence after
their stunning win on the July 13th against England in the NatWest
        Final.
It was here at Lord's in the summer of 1996 - both Sourav Ganguly
and Rahul Dravid made their Test debut.
The master batsman Sachin Tendulkar does not have a good record
here at Lord's - he has the scores of 10, 27 and 31 so far at this
        venue in Test matches.
Tendulkar would want to make a big score here and even go past Sir
Donald Bradman's record of 29 Test Hundreds.
India have decided to go in with three seamers and a spinner.
Harbhajan Singh has been left out - which means Kumble plays.
India: W Jaffer, V Sehwag, R Dravid, SR Tendulkar, *SC Ganguly, VVS
Laxman, +A Ratra, A Kumble, AB Agarkar, Z Khan, A Nehra
England have won the toss and are batting first.
India and England have so far met 13 times at Lord's - England have
won 9 times, three times drawn and India won in 1986 - the
        solitary Test win at Lord's
Clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine here at Lord's

89.6 Khan to Stewart, no run, inside edge onto the pads, no damage done,
that is that for the first day's play, England are 257/4 after

giving him good company on 19 not out.

England were off to a disappointing start, losing Vaughan for a
duck in the second over of the day.
Hussain walked in and played a very good knock, he has looked at
ease in the middle, even daring to dance down the track and
        lofting Kumble for boundaries.
Hussain has for the best part of the day aimed to play Kumble -
inside-out, has remarkably cut down on the sweep shot, also on
that dreadful reverse sweep he kept playing in the tri-series
        final.
Eighty runs off those 120 runs came in boundaries.
Butcher was the second batsman to be dismissed in the day, caught
at forward short leg by Jaffer. Butcher made 29 and put 78 runs
for the second wicket with Hussain.
Correction: 71 runs for the second wicket
Graham Thorpe came out and put away a full toss to the cover fence
and was soon beaten all ends up by a beauty from Zaheer Khan,
playing down the wrong line to lose his off stump, after making
        just 4 runs
It was then the turn of Hussain and Crawley to grind the Indian
        bowling.
Only Zaheer Khan and Kumble looked like getting a wicket
Nehra struggled - much better will be expected of him by his team
The shocking story of the day has been Ajit Agarkar - he never
looked like a bowler who should be bowling in a test match.
With his left shoulder dropping a bit too early, he found it hard
to control both line and length and was taken for runs.
Crawley, started off with boundaries to third-man, three of them to
be exact in his first 20 runs.
The two senior batsmen put together 145 runs and saved the day for
        England.
Crawley made 64 with the help of 9 boundaries, before being caught
by Dravid off the bowling of Sehwag, trying to cut a delivery that
        he expected to turn in.
The experience of Hussain and Stewart took England to 257/4 at
close of play, ensuring that they did not lose any more wickets.
The pitch is playing true, there has been a few occasions when the
ball kept a tad low or jumped up, while Kumble was bowling. It is
a dry pitch and looks a very good one to bat on.
India, probably made a mistake of leaving out Harbhajan Singh.
England would want Hussain and Stewart to carry on batting for a
long time tomorrow. While Ganguly would hope for some quick
wickets. His bowlers will have to put up a better show tomorrow
        for that to happen.
We will be back with you tomorrow at 1000 Hrs GMT, 1100 Hrs BST,
1530 Hrs IST. Thanks for being with us. Cheers!

Match State: Stumps - Day 1

       Good Morning!
Hello and welcome to Lord's for the second day's play in the first
npower Test match between England and India.
England will resume on their overnight score of 257/4, Nasser
Hussain on 120 and Alec Stewart on 19.
It is a sunny morning here in London, clear blue skies and
        brilliant sunshine.
India would want a better performance from their frontline bowlers.
Ganguly must be looking forward to a much improved show by
        Agarkar.
They have a fairly new ball to bowl with. It is only eight overs
old and should have a fair bit of shine on it.
The track looks flat and a good one to bat on.
Whether the bowlers can make use of the new ball is going to be the
key, a few early wickets would peg back the English.
In Andrew Flintoff and Craig White, England have some batting
depth. Both the batsmen have scored Test hundreds.
Well, today is a brand new day - Hussain and Stewart would have to
        start from scratch.
The umpires and players are in the middle, we are all set for the
        start
It is going to be Ashish Nehra to bowl left-arm over the wicket to
Hussain. Three slips and a gully.
       Here we go
90.1 Nehra to Hussain, no run, angling away from the batsman, well
        outside the off, left alone
90.2 Nehra to Hussain, no run, on leg and middle, Hussain defends
90.3 Nehra to Hussain, no run, a bit too close to the off stump to be
        leaving alone
90.4 Nehra to Hussain, bye: FOUR, terrible delivery, fired way way down
the leg side, Ratra can't get to it, four byes!
90.5 Nehra to Hussain, one run, worked around the corner to long leg
90.6 Nehra to Stewart, no run, well up to the batsman, Stewart shuffles
        across, defends.

        length, defended

And that ends an agonising session for India, with England's tail
merely piling on the misery in adding quick runs.
115 runs were scored before the final wicket fell in this session,
much too many for any lower order. India's bowlers were wayward,
and Flintoff and Simon Jones merely took maximum toll to post

White played a nice sheet anchor for the most part, and even the
last man in - Matthew Hoggard - gave dogged support and added
valuable runs for the final wicket.
