6th ODI: Sri Lanka v India, Statistical highlights

  • It was the 62nd match between the two sides.India has won 34,Sri Lanka 23,while 5 match were abandoned.
  • Umpires G.Silva and EKG Wijewardene were both making their ODI umpiring debut.
  • It was India's first win over Sri Lanka on Sri Lankan soil under Tendulkar's captaincy.
  • Tendulkar scored his 23rd hundred in 221st match.It was his fifth hundred against SriLanka.Now only Pakistan's Saeed Anwar has scored more hundreds (6) against Sri Lanka.
  • Tendulkar has now scored a hundred in every 9.60 matches.All other Indians (considering only those who have scored at least one hundred in a career) have scored 53 hundreds in a total of 2189 matches together at a rate of a hundred in every 41.30 matches
  • It was Tendulkar's fifth hundred as captain.He has now scored the most hundreds as captain than anyone else.He was previously at level with fellow countryman Mohammad Azharuddin and Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga with four hundreds.
  • It was also Tendulkar's highest score as captain. His previous best was 117 against New Zealand at Bangalore on 14 May 1997.
  • Saurav Ganguly,on 23,completed his 1000 runs in ODIs in 1999.He was playing his 25th match.Ganguly thus became fourth batsman to complete 1000 runs in the calendar year 1999 after Australia's Mark Waugh (1289 runs in 33 matches) and Adam Gilchrist (1160 runs in 33 matches) and fellow Indian Rahul Dravid (1159 runs in 27 matches)
  • Ganguly has now aggregated more than 1000 runs in a calendar year on three occasions-1338 runs (@ 41.81) in 38 matches in 1997,1331 runs (@ 41.50) in 36 matches in 1998.......and now 1062 runs (@ 44.25) in 25 matches in 1999.Only fellow Indian Sachin Tendulkar has aggregated 1000 runs in a calendar year on more occasions (4) than Ganguly.
  • Ganguly,on 84,completed his 4000 runs in ODIs.He became fifth Indian and 34th batsman in the world to reach this landmark. By doing so in his 110th match and 105th innings,Ganguly now holds the Indian record of completing 4000 runs in least no. of innings and matches.The previous record in terms ofinnings was held by Navjot Sidhu,taking 109 innings (and 116 matches) o achieve this landmark,while Sachin Tendulkar with 115 matches (and 112 innings) was the previous record holder in terms of least matches. Incidentally WestIndian Viv Richards holds the world record of completing 4000 runs in least no.of matches and innings - 96 and 88 respectively.
  • Sanath Jayasuriya,on 15,completed his 1000 runsin ODIs against India.He became fourth Sri Lankan (after Aravinda DeSilva, Arjuna Ranatunga and Roshan Mahanama) and 13th batsman to do so.

  • Robin Singh won MoM award for the third time in his career (this includes a joint award with Zimbabwean Eddo Brandes).The last time Robin Singh won a MoM award was also against SriLanka at Guwahati on 22-12-1997.
