9th Match, ICC Knock Out, Ind v SA, Statistical Highlights

Rajneesh Gupta

October 15, 2000

  • It was the 1638th ODI in cricket history.

  • It was India's 448th and South Africa's 210th ODI.

  • It was the 38th match between these two sides. The record now reads: India 13, South Africa 24, abandoned one.

  • Saurav Ganguly scored his 14th ODI hundred in his 148th match-his second against South Africa. Ganguly is now at par with Australia's Mark Waugh moving ahead of West Indies' Brian Lara to be placed joint fourth in the list of batsmen with most number of centuries after Sachin Tendulkar (25), Saeed Anwar (19) and Desmond Haynes (17).

  • Ganguly, when reached 48, completed his 1000 runs in the calendar year 2000. He became the fourth batsman to do so this year after Gary Kirsten, Yousuf Youhana and Jacques Kallis. Ganguly has now aggregated 1000 or more runs for four consecutive years (starting from 1997). He thus became the first batsman in the ODI history to do so.

  • Ganguly's innings is the highest for India against South Africa beating Tendulkar's 122 at Baroda on 17-03-2000. It is also the second highest by any batsman against South Africa after West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul's 150 at East London on 24-01-1999.

  • It was the third occasion when Ganguly was hitting six or more sixes in a match for India. He had hit seven sixes against Sri Lanka in the World Cup game against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-05-1999 and against Bangladesh in an Asia Cup game at Dhaka on 30-05-2000. He now holds the record of hitting six sixes in a match on most occasions in the world. Six batsmen-Viv Richards, Sanath Jayasuriya, Shahid Afridi, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Cairns and Ricardo Powell have performed this feat on two occasions each.

  • Ganguly scored 80 runs from strokes worth four or more (six sixes and 11 fours) during his innings, which is the most by a batsman against South Africa. West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul had also made 80 runs in boundaries (20 fours) at East London on 24-01-1999.

  • Nicky Boje, by conceding 26 runs in two overs, equalled the worst bowling performance by a South African in a two over spell in the ODIs. Nantie Hayward returned the identical figures against Sri Lanka at Colombo SSC on 11-07-2000.

  • Jacques Kallis's figures (10-0-71-2) are the second most expensive for South Africa in a ten over spell. The dubious record is also held by Kallis himself. He conceded 74 runs in his 10 overs against Australia at Colonial Stadium (Melbourne) on 16-08-2000. Incidentally Allan Donald conceded 72 runs in his nine overs against England at Centurion on 14-01-1996.

  • Anil Kumble has now taken 42 wickets in 31 matches against South Africa. Only Australia's Shane Warne has taken more against South Africa-53 in 37 matches.

  • The victory margin of 95 runs is largest for India against South Africa. The previous largest win for India against South Africa was by 74 runs at Mumbai Wankhede on 14-12-1996. The win is also the third largest against South Africa in all ODIs after the 107 run defeat by the hands of West Indies at Kingston on 07-04-1992 and 103 run defeat inflicted by Australia at Sydney on 14-12-1993.

  • The victory is also the largest by runs margin against South Africa on a neutral venue. Pakistan had beaten South Africa by 67 runs at Sharjah on 28-03-2000.

  • Saurav Ganguly won his 22nd Man of the Match award.
