Windies wicket-keeper Jacobs banned

Media Release

July 5, 2001

West Indian wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs has been suspended for the three One Day Internationals versus Kenya, being 15, 16 and 19 August 2001, as a result of an incident during the One Day International Match held on 4 July, in Harare, Zimbabwe, versus India, whereby an Indian batsman was stumped by Jacobs. The television reply showed that Jacobs had stumped Sehwag whilst the ball was clearly in Jacobs left hand which was nowhere near the broken wicket. International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Denis Lindsay convened a hearing involving Ridley Jacobs, captain Carl Hooper, coach Roger Harper and team manager Ricky Skerritt, together with Zimbabwe Cricket Union CEO, Dave Ellman-Brown.

The match referee found Jacobs guilty of a breach of the Players and Team Officials Code C2, namely: "Players and/or Team Officials shall at no time engage in conduct unbecoming to their status which could bring them or the game of cricket into disrepute."

In addition, the match referee found Jacobs guilty of transgressing the Spirit of Cricket point 5 of the Official ICC Laws of Cricket 2000 Code, namely: "It is against the Spirit of the Game to indulge in cheating or any sharp practice." The match referee noted that whilst Jacobs did not claim the stumping, he had more than ample opportunity to recall batsman Sehwag which he failed to do.
