South Africa notch easy win over UAE

Staff Reporter

November 3, 2002

A power-packed showing from Justin Kemp and Gerald Dros at the top of the order secured South Africa their third win in as many matches in the 2002 Hong Kong Sixes being played at the Kowloon Cricket Club. On Sunday, the Proteas, who have already booked their place in the championship round, humbled the winless UAE side by 20 runs in their last league encounter.

The foundations for the emphatic win was laid when Kemp (36 off 11 balls with to fours and four sixes) and Dros (36 off 10 with three fours and four sixes) pummelled the UAE bowlers into submission after South Africa were sent in. With skipper Lance Klusener continuing to pile on the runs - he made 22 off eight balls with three fours and a six - South Africa ended up with a mammoth 101-0 at the end of their five overs.

When UAE replied, opener Arshad Ali got among the runs again. The Pakistan-born Ali made 33 from 11 balls before retiring while his partner Asim Saeed weighed in with a 25.

But with the asking rate shooting up with every passing over, a hapless UAE side could do little to escape the thrashing.

South Africa will now play the winner of the England-Hong Kong clash in the championship round while UAE would take on the the team that loses.
