CricInfo/Gunn and Moore 'Unsung Hero' Competition
Winners

Gunn & Moore

Week 1: Congratulations to Jackie Lansdown, winner of the Women's Cricket 'Unsung Hero' award. Gunn and Moore will shortly be sending her a kit-bag full of equipment.

Nominated by John Birch, a local umpire, Jackie is credited as being critical to the development of women's cricket in North Hertfordshire. "She was a prime-mover behind the founding of Hitchin Ladies (1985) and she is key to its continued health," John explained." She has worked tirelessly, on the pitch and off, to attract new and to develop existing players, to establish and maintain links with the men's club, and to coach youngsters. There would be no women's cricket in the area without her."

"She has a superb batting style," John continued, "and the team she put together won the national indoor championship."

Jackie, who has won her first coaching badge, is heavily involved in coaching at the club, and the school where she is a Maths teacher. She had no idea she had been nominated, so was surprised as well as delighted when she spoke to CricInfo. "We're doing well at the moment," she admitted. "Lots of people want to play for us, and we have developed a few junior county players."

"I used to play for Cardiff ladies, and I captained Oxford University," Jackie explained, "but when I moved here I found there was no local team. There were a few of us involved in deciding to set something up, and we asked personalities such as Rachael Heyhoe-Flint to help promote the new club. It has become more of a problem finding local opposition."

There were plenty of other deserving nominations, though some were more 'unsung' than others. Notable entries included England captain Clare Connor for "the way she carries herself off the field," and wicket-keeper Jane Cassar who can be "relied upon to give 110%."

Well done to everyone who was nominated!
