 Profile

After managing only two first-class games in 2005-06 because of back stress fractures, Damien Wright celebrated his return in style the following summer when he bowled Tasmania to their first Pura Cup title. Wright gave New South Wales no chance of a face-saving draw, taking 5 for 13 on the final day to seal the win. He had already been instrumental in setting up the one-sided finish - he collected 3 for 38 in the first innings and made vital batting contributions of 67 and 47. He only played five matches for the season but his 18 victims at 23.16 put him within reach of the state's all-time Sheffield-Shield/Pura Cup record. It was a mark that would remain out of the grasp of Wright, who was sidelined throughout 2007-08 with injuries and signed with Victoria for the 2008-09 campaign.

His move to the Bushrangers continued the journeyman nature of Wright's career. Originally from New South Wales, he moved to Tasmania in 1997-98 and has also played for Scotland in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy, made eight Australia A appearances and had stints with two counties. His 2004-05 home summer was excellent - he picked up 39 wickets at 31.35 and 534 runs in the Pura Cup - and he then headed to Northamptonshire, where he combined 53 wickets with 609 runs. However, the extra workload hurt his back and he sat out most of 2005-06 and the start of 2006-07. He signed with Glamorgan for 2007, on the understanding he would not be overworked.
