After dislocating his right shoulder completing a diving save early on and spending most of India's innings off the field, Jayasuriya returned to bat in some discomfort at No. 6, yet guided Sri Lanka to victory with a diligent unbeaten 43 off 50 balls. Maharoof, playing with the style and confidence of a genuine batsman, lent him decisive support. India had declined to 64 for five in the 20th over after Lokuhettige Dilhara, a handy all-rounder making his debut, recovered from being hit for three fours in his opening over by Sehwag to dismiss the dangerous pair of Dhoni and Yuvraj. It took all of Dravid's skill and experience to rebuild India's innings, with 54 from 96 balls. Even though Harbhajan and Zaheer smashed 43 in 5.3 overs at the end, the total still seemed inadequate, but it needed Jayasuriya to make sure for Sri Lanka. To add to their glee, Dilhara had further revenge on Sehwag by hitting the third ball he faced in international cricket over long-on for six.
