A fighting century from Tatenda Taibu went in vain as Zimbabwe Select failed to avert the follow-on by two runs on the third day against India A at Harare. Taibu scored 123 to lift his side to 338 and they lost Tinotenda Mawoyo for 0 second time round before the close.
Resuming on 129 for 4 after the first two days were dominated by the Indians, Zimbabwe lost two early wickets to slump to 136 for 6, still trailing by 353 runs. Taibu was joined by captain Prosper Utseya and the two set about rebuilding the innings. They defied the Indian bowlers for close to three hours and added 128 runs for the seventh wicket.
With 76 runs still needed to make the Indians bat again, Zimbabwean hopes were dealt a blow when Utseya was caught and bowled by legspinner Piyush Chawla. Greame Cremer helped Taibu take the score to 283 before nicking a delivery from Irfan Pathan to the wicketkeeper.
Gary Brent, who has scored two centuries and seven fifties in domestic cricket, walked in at No. 9 and batted for more than 100 minutes for his 15. Taibu drove Pawar over mid-off to bring up his hundred, made off 205 balls in 307 minutes but with Zimbabwe requiring just six more runs, Chawla bowled him between bat and pad. Last man Christopher Mpofu couldn't handle Chawla's legspin for long and the Indians enforced the follow-on.
Chawla was the star performer for India snapping up 4 for 40 off 22 overs. Although Pathan picked up two wickets, it wasn't a performance to savour as he was expensive, giving away four runs an over, and overstepped 11 times.
After this game, the two sides square up in another four-day match, at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, starting on Monday.
